Privacy Policy
The short version: this site sets no cookies of its own and collects nothing that identifies you. It measures a cookieless page-view count, and while its advertising application is under review it loads Google's advertising script, which contacts Google and may set a cookie from Google's own domain. Both are described below.
Current status. As of the review date at the foot of this page, The Demise Ledger sets no cookies of its own, shows no advertising, and has no accounts, logins or comments. The site contains one interactive form — the novelty “How Will You Demise?” calculator — which is read entirely by JavaScript in your own browser and submits nothing anywhere. The site measures page views, through Cloudflare Web Analytics — cookieless, and described below. It also carries Google's AdSense script while an advertising application is reviewed; that script contacts Google's advertising servers and Google may set a short-lived cookie from its own domain, as described under Advertising. Nothing you do on the site is stored anywhere — not on our servers, and not in your browser.
What the site collects
Almost nothing. The only measurement is a page-view count from Cloudflare Web Analytics: it records that a page was loaded, the page it was reached from, and broad browser and device details. It sets no cookie, assigns you no identifier, and cannot follow you to other sites. Beyond that there is no tracking pixel, no fingerprinting, and no other third-party embed that reports back on you. The counters, the country atlas and the novelty calculator all run entirely inside your own browser; none of your interactions leave your device.
In particular, the "How Will You Demise?" calculator never transmits your answers. The tick-boxes are read by JavaScript running on your machine and are discarded the moment you close the tab.
What the site stores on your device
Nothing of its own. The Ledger itself sets no cookies and writes nothing to local storage or
session storage. The one exception is third-party: Google's advertising script, described
under Advertising, may set a cookie from Google's doubleclick.net domain. Whether
your browser accepts it depends on your third-party cookie settings; most current browsers
block or partition such cookies by default.
Server logs
Like effectively every website, the server that delivers these pages keeps standard access logs, which typically record the IP address making the request, the page requested, a timestamp, and the browser's user-agent string. These are generated by the hosting infrastructure for security and reliability purposes, are not used to build any profile of you, and are not combined with anything else.
Third parties that see your request
Four external services are contacted by your browser when a page loads — two for typography and icons, one for the page-view count, and one for advertising:

Neither is asked to identify you, and neither receives anything about what you did on the page. Both operate under their own privacy policies, which govern their handling of that request data.
Advertising
Applied for, not yet showing ads. The site has applied to Google AdSense.
Google requires its script to be present on every page while it reviews an application, so
that script is loaded. No advertisements are displayed. The script does, however, contact
Google's advertising servers when a page loads, sending the page address and your browser
details, and Google attempts to set a short-lived cookie from its own
doubleclick.net domain. That is governed by
Google's privacy policy, and
you can prevent it by blocking third-party cookies in your browser. If the application is
approved and advertising is switched on, the section below applies, and this page will be
updated with a new review date before that happens.
If and when advertising is switched on, it will be supplied by Google AdSense. In that case:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this and other sites.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info/choices.
- Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland would be shown a consent notice before any advertising or measurement cookies were set, and could refuse them.
Children
This site is not directed at children, does not knowingly collect information from anyone, and given that it collects nothing at all, holds no information about children or anyone else.
Your rights
Data protection law — including the GDPR in Europe and the UK, and POPIA in South Africa — gives you rights to access, correct and erase personal data held about you. Because this site holds no personal data, there is nothing to access, correct or erase. If you believe otherwise, please get in touch and it will be investigated.
Changes to this policy
If what the site does changes — most likely by introducing advertising — this page will be updated before that change goes live, and the review date at the foot of the page will move. Material changes will be summarised at the top of this policy.
