Privacy Policy
The short version: this site sets no cookies of its own and does not ask who you are. It measures a cookieless page-view count, and while its advertising application is under review it loads Google's advertising script, which contacts Google and may set a cookie from Google's own domain. The host keeps ordinary server logs. All of this is described below.
Current status. As of the review date at the foot of this page, The Demise Ledger sets no cookies of its own, shows no advertising, and has no accounts, logins or comments. The site contains one interactive form, the novelty "How Will You Demise?" calculator, which is read entirely by JavaScript in your own browser and submits nothing anywhere. The site measures page views through Cloudflare Web Analytics. That count is cookieless, and it is described below. It also carries Google's AdSense script while an advertising application is reviewed. That script contacts Google's advertising servers, and Google may set a short-lived cookie from its own domain, as described under Advertising. The Ledger keeps no account of you. The host does keep ordinary server logs, described below.
What the site collects
Almost nothing. The only measurement is a page-view count from Cloudflare Web Analytics: it records that a page was loaded, the page it was reached from, and broad browser and device details. It sets no cookie, assigns you no identifier, and cannot follow you to other sites. Beyond that there is no tracking pixel and no fingerprinting. The advertising script, described under Advertising, is the other request that leaves the device. The counters, the country atlas and the novelty calculator all run entirely inside your own browser; none of your interactions leave your device.
In particular, the "How Will You Demise?" calculator never transmits your answers. The tick-boxes are read by JavaScript running on your machine and are discarded the moment you close the tab.
What the site stores on your device
The Ledger itself sets no cookies and writes nothing to session storage. If you change the
aspect on the homepage, it stores that choice in local storage so the other pages can use the
same one. The stored value is the name of the aspect. It is not an identifier, and it is not
sent anywhere. Google's advertising script, described under Advertising, may set a cookie from
Google's doubleclick.net domain. Whether your browser accepts it depends on your
third-party cookie settings; most current browsers block or partition such cookies by default.
Server logs
Like effectively every website, the server that delivers these pages keeps standard access logs, which typically record the IP address making the request, the page requested, a timestamp, and the browser's user-agent string. These are generated by the hosting infrastructure for security and reliability purposes, are not used to build any profile of you, and are not combined with anything else.
Third parties that see your request
Your browser contacts up to four external services when a page loads. Google Fonts serves the typefaces. Cloudflare Web Analytics counts the page view. Google's advertising script loads on every public page except the error page. The homepage also requests the icon set from Cloudflare's cdnjs. The other pages do not.

None of them is asked to identify you, and none receives anything about what you did on the page. Each operates under its own privacy policy, which governs its handling of that request data.
Advertising
Applied for, not yet showing ads. The site has applied to Google AdSense.
Google requires its script to be present on every page while it reviews an application, so
that script is loaded. No advertisements are displayed. The script does, however, contact
Google's advertising servers when a page loads, sending the page address and your browser
details, and Google attempts to set a short-lived cookie from its own
doubleclick.net domain. That is governed by
Google's privacy policy, and
you can prevent it by blocking third-party cookies in your browser. If the application is
approved and advertising is switched on, the section below applies, and this page will be
updated with a new review date before that happens.
If and when advertising is switched on, it will be supplied by Google AdSense. In that case:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this and other sites.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info/choices.
- Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland would be shown a consent notice before any advertising or measurement cookies were set, and could refuse them.
Children
This site is not directed at children. It does not ask for anyone's name, age or contact details, and it holds no account of a child or of anyone else. Ordinary server logs, described above, may include an IP address.
Australian privacy law
The Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles generally apply to organisations with annual turnover above $3 million, and to some smaller ones. A smaller organisation is covered if it provides a health service and holds health information, or if it sells or trades personal information. The site does not send commercial email, and it keeps no mailing list.
This site does neither. It is not a health service, it does not hold health information about any identifiable person, and it does not sell personal information. The novelty calculator runs in your browser and is not a record of your health. On that basis the small-business exemption is expected to apply.
That expectation will be checked again before any advertising is switched on. If Google were to receive personal information in return for advertising revenue, the exemption can cease to apply. This page would be updated first.
Google and Cloudflare may process a request outside Australia. While the Privacy Act applies, an Australian organisation must take reasonable steps before personal information is disclosed overseas. The site does not send a name, an account, or a health record. Your browser does contact those services, as the table above sets out.
Your rights
Where the Privacy Act applies, you can ask for access to personal information held about you and ask for a correction. The Act does not give a general right to have information erased. People in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom may have separate rights, including erasure, under the GDPR or the UK GDPR, where those laws apply to them.
The site holds no account and no profile to produce. A request can be sent through the contact page. If the Privacy Act applies and you are not satisfied with the response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
Changes to this policy
If what the site does changes, most likely by introducing advertising, this page will be updated before that change goes live, and the review date at the foot of the page will move. Material changes will be summarised at the top of this policy.
