The Demise Ledger
The Pathological Toll
Tracking the relentless harvest of diseases, chronic conditions, and biological pathogens.
Accidental Dooms
Human mishaps and kinetic failures: traffic, falls, drowning, fire, toxins, and voltage.
The twelve cards above come to about 48.4 million deaths a year. The all-cause baseline is 61.5 million. These are published lines from the gap. They are not added to the twelve, and they do not use up the gap. A line with no settled annual total has an explanation and no counter.
Conditions left out
Cirrhosis of the liver. In the glossary, and outside metabolic collapse, which is diabetes and kidney disease. No single rounded global total is printed here, so there is no counter. Why some lines do not tick.
Drug use disorders. Where the WHO file puts fatal overdose. The glossary keeps this apart from unintentional poisoning. The global line is too easy to confuse with that smaller card, so it is explained and not ticked.
Nutritional deficiencies. Named in the methodology as part of the gap. There is no counter until a total can be cited the way the neonatal and maternal lines are.
Ill-defined causes. The remainder every mortality file carries: certificates that do not name a usable cause. That is a hole in the record, not a rate to animate. The explanation.
Injuries left out
Collective violence. War, and deaths caused by police or other authorities in the course of their duties. A year of it is not a peacetime rate. A year the rate cannot describe is the essay. There is no counter.
Natural disasters. Earthquakes, floods, and storms. One catastrophe can be a quarter of a country’s deaths, as the glossary says of Libya in 2023. Lightning stays on the rare card. There is no smooth annual counter.
The two counters in this column describe suicide and homicide. If any of this is difficult for you, findahelpline.com lists free, confidential support lines in most countries.
The bars split deaths since you arrived into fixed age shares. The title opens the article from the start, and each name opens that age.
Atlas of Lethal Claims
Select a country, then toggle between illnesses and external causes. Each list is that country's largest shares of deaths in 2023, at most five, taken from one fixed set of causes, so a name means the same thing everywhere. External causes are injuries, including self-harm and violence. Drug overdose is counted as an illness, under drug use disorders: 3.4% of deaths in the United States and 3.1% in Canada, larger than any injury there, and still outside the five leading illnesses. Deaths from firearms are included in self-harm or interpersonal violence, according to intent.
Countries with no card Eleven WHO members under 90,000 people, plus Taiwan, Kosovo, Liechtenstein, Hong Kong and Macao.
Some figures in this column describe suicide and violence. If any of this is difficult for you, findahelpline.com lists free, confidential support lines in most countries.
Disclaimer: Cause shares are the WHO Global Health Estimates for 2023, all ages and both sexes, rounded to one decimal place. Life expectancy and the crude death rate are the United Nations World Population Prospects for 2023, as published by the World Bank, rounded to one decimal place. They are estimates, not a live count, and not a complete national series. Where death registration is incomplete, the cause shares rest more on modelling than on certificates. The terms are defined in the glossary. This is not a health service or medical advice, and it should not be used for policy, clinical decisions, or personal health choices.
From a few thousand a year down to one, or to none. Some of these are registers. Some are estimates. Two are folklore, and the column says which.
Read this column sceptically. Lightning is a counted floor. Scorpion stings and avalanches are published estimates, and both are probably short. Hippos and selfies are numbers the internet repeats. Coconuts have no global count. Spontaneous human combustion is not a cause of death. Bee stings, skydiving and pufferfish are one country’s series, and the card says which country. Commercial aircraft uses a five-year mean, and the second line is a real year, which can sit far from that mean. The explainer on rare deaths goes through them one by one. The Accelerated ×160 counters run 160 times faster than the printed annual figure, so that something visibly happens during a visit. They are a stage effect. This Year uses that printed figure, with no multiplier. Where the figure is folklore, This Year is folklore too.
Grim Reaper Telemetry Ticker
Invented lines. Causes are drawn in proportion to the twelve disease and accident cards further up the page. Cities are set dressing. No line is a person or an event.
How Will You Demise?
Tick your vices. The Ledger files a theatrical verdict from what you confess. It is a novelty, not a health service, and not medical advice.
Consult again, and the Ledger may revise the entry.
Disclaimer: This is a tongue-in-cheek novelty for entertainment only. It is not a health service, and it is not a medical prediction, risk assessment, diagnosis, or advice of any kind. Real mortality depends on countless factors this quiz does not measure. If you have health concerns, speak to a doctor or another registered health practitioner.
